3x01 Burning Down the House | Continuous
THIS IS ALL ONE SHOT!!!!!!!!!!! THIS IS ALL. ONE SHOT.
A nearly two-minute walk and talk in the precinct set with NO CUTS. For TWO MINUTES.
This is TWO FULL YEARS before The West Wing, which popularized the long hallway single shot walk and talk.
Genuinely hard to convey how difficult a shot like this is to choreograph with so many different moving pieces. As one continuous take this shot is WILD. It means everything—including the push in to Ray and Elaine, the pull back out to include Fraser stepping precisely back into frame, the ACTUAL LIVE DOG, the walk into the bullpen with all the extras cutting in front of camera, the gag with the ink—all of that is in ONE GO, NO FUCK UPS.
INCLUDING!! One of the best pieces of acting in the ENTIRE SERIES right here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE love at first sight moment. In the MIDDLE of all this.
My favourite thing about this is imagining Gordon Pinsent standing patiently in the bullpen waiting for his moment for the 45 times it took to get the first ninety seconds of this shot clean.
Tumblr media
Oh I will never be done being obsessed with this show. The level of stagecraft involved here alone is insane. Paul Gross the man you are,
Happy 27th birthday today, Burning Down the House (Sept. 14, 1997)!! You are still iconic🇨🇦🍁

The parallels between the first and last episode with Ray Kowalski are so good.
"You know who I am, Fraser. Everyone here knows who I am."
"Do you ever feel like you don't know who you are? Like if you weren't around somebody, or that someone wasn't around you, then you wouldn't be you, or at least not the you that you think you are. You ever think like that?"

In general, the brothel scene was brilliantly film. I especially liked the shooting angle from above, because Aemond looks like death there.
Tumblr media
I really like how they did it. Although for me this whole scene was, as it's said, too much, a bit thick. Well, I don't know, but it was hard for me, I felt uncomfortable watching the brothel scene from the beginning to the end. And yet milk. Oh, Christ.
But then I thought maybe it should be uncomfortable.
We had grown accustomed to watching someone being killed, tortured, maimed in TV series. Game of Thrones has rape scenes. Outlander has rape scenes, and they are filmed in remarkable way. Several women were raped there, at least one child, – on top of that then his hand was cut off after some time, – and one man. And the scene with the male character, oddly enough, is the worst of all: he was in prison at that time, he was tortured, abused and raped. The scene is truly monstrous, awful and nightmarish, but I watched it, and you know what, it didn't really scratch me. I mean, I was like: well, ahh, that was terrifyingly, what next? let's continue to watch next. And my gut tells me that I wasn't the only one who thought so.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That is, now, for some reason, we – humanity – take a calmly view of very scary things. Or very indecent ones. In TV series, there are explicit scenes of torture, explicit scenes of sexual content, which are also generally inappropriate to show, yes, some other 'too much' moments... and that passes for normal. However, as soon as one shows a scene where a character is just lying on someone's soft lap, trying to abstract their mind, and all this is so vulnerable, tender and fragile, that people say: we feel uncomfortable!
So, watching someone being raped or murdered, or how captain Flint struck Singleton across the face with a cannonball and beat him to a bloody mess – this is normal for us, but watching a person who is vulnerable, open and seeks solace – is no.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We, the audience, are so unprepared to face our own vulnerability that we feel uncomfortable seeing it in someone else.
We are ready to meet with any expressions of violence against other people, against ourselves, because life is dark and full of terrors. One reads the news items every morning, there is an endless chain of murders, explosions, riots, arson attacks, terroristic acts, and some other villainies happen all the time. It has even start to wear thin! We have become so accustomed to it that at some point one sits and says: ah, someone was blown up here again, something fell there, something was burned out, someone was shot, those built a trebuchet and bomb their neighbors across the border, someone was flayed alive. In general, nothing new. You just sit and think: okay, things are getting worse every minute, but overall, it's possible to live, just live on, we are constantly faced with all this, so, darling, just keep yourself alive, please...
And then they show us Aemond in a brothel, and we are not ready for it. We feel uncomfortable, because we begin to feel vulnerable ourselves.
Tumblr media
In Black Sails, in Season 3, John Silver says an absolutely wonderful phrase: I cannot look weak, I cannot feel weak, I cannot be weak.
I totally agree.
We are all obsessed with... well, not all of us, but many of us, I know people like that, I am that person myself... with not being weak, not looking or feeling weak, with being strong in any situation. I'm obsessed with self-control as well. Maybe that is why Aemond is so like-minded for me, not only because of fierce embitterment contained in both of us, but also because of the idea of controlling our own feelings.
I used to be very wishy-washy in my previous life. Now I'm a kind of reasonable person, but before... I'm very ashamed of who I had once been, because I complained about my life, I was spineless, weak, neither fish nor fowl. It really pissed me off, I hated and despised myself for it. At some point, I realized: I must to grab myself by the balls (figuratively speaking), clench my fists and jaw, stand out the cords of my neck and become a strong person or do something of that kind to stop despising myself. So yes, I'm obsessed with the idea of self-control, with being someone who solves problems, neither creates ones nor suffers from them.
And maybe for me, and maybe for many others, it was uncomfortable to watch the scene with Aemond and Sylvi for this very reason, because all of that is such an exposure of the human soul that you just unable to bear it.
Tumblr media
I really like the House of the Dragon screenwriter's innovation in this regard. The brothel scene hit us where it hurts the most. Well done. I'm delighted. They did this scene so great. I love it showed Aemond from his vulnerable side, from the side of a person who is also worried, being emotional over, but is trying to somehow solve all this in other ways. It doesn't mean Aemond does nothing. He does what no one else does – he thinks. He takes a break and reflects.
That's an excerpt from the new episode of the Tea & Rum podcast about Aemond's first brothel scene.

Other posts about that.

Moana 2 (2024)
This is a Movie Health Community evaluation. It is intended to inform people of potential health hazards in movies and does not reflect the quality of the film itself. The information presented here has not been reviewed by any medical professionals.
Moana 2 has several scenes depicting extreme lightning at night, including one sequence where a character fights against bolts of lightning. These scenes are predictable for the most part, but the flashing is severe, and the individual moments of flashing in these scenes are hard to brace for. Important story beats will be missed if you cover your eyes during these scenes.
The vast majority of this film takes place on the open sea, so several scenes feature some rocking on the sea. There are also high-speed chase scenes and scenes following flying characters through complex maneuvers.
Flashing Lights: 9/10. Motion Sickness: 5/10.
TRIGGER WARNING: This film features a sequence with a lot of large fantastical sphincters expelling gross fluids all over people, and more scenes using gross-out humor with animal secretions.

1x02 Diefenbaker’s Day Off // 2x08 One Good Man // 2x13 White Men Can’t Jump to Conclusions // 3x01 Burning Down the House | Normalized
due South does a main character re-casting better than any other show on TV, and they do it by playing with television's own accepted meta-narrative.
Recasting a character has a long tradition in television, creating a viewership that knows and understands the storytelling short form at play. As viewers, we realize that sometimes actors aren't available to reprise a role (or simply aren't interested in it anymore); but, for the sake of the story, sometimes the show needs that character to come back. So we lean hard into suspended disbelief and just go with it. After all, the characters in the show accept the parareality of it—why shouldn't we?
Of course, the most famous example of a character recast would be the Dick/Darren disaster on 1960s sitcom Bewitched, when Dick York was unceremoniously replaced by Dick Sargent in the role of Darrin Stephens. ("The Dick Wars" would have gone absolutely insane).
Tumblr media
it was... not successful
But they weren't the only ones to do it. Aunt Viv from Fresh Prince, Becky from Roseanne, Daario Naharis from Game of Thrones, Greg Serrano from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (pain, agony)—recasting characters but maintaining the fiction is a storied tradition in TV. New actor, same character; totally normalized.
And shows continue to do it, even today, with a—uh—similar dedication to fucking it up doing it poorly.
Tumblr media
why must we be punished like this
due South even engages in this trope itself in season 2, when hard-hitting investigative journalist Mackenzie King is recast and they don't even try to find an actress who looks similar. In 1x02 Diefenbaker's Day Off, she's played by brunette Madolyn Smith-Osborne; in 2x08 One Good Man, she's been replaced by blonde Maria Bello, and nobody talks about it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yeah i'm absolutely the same person, obviously
Everyone diegetically (within the world of the show) is just like, oh yeah, that's hard-hitting investigative journalist Mackenzie King. Totally. Only non-diegetically (outside of the world of the show) does the viewer go "No, that's not the same person." Internally, the fiction proceeds as usual.
So what would happen if, say, Samantha Stephens turned to Dick Sargent and said "You're not Darrin," when everyone else in the show continued to treat him as though he was? Or if Jaskier told Geralt that he knows he's not actually Geralt, and everyone treated him like he was delusional?
Or if Fraser, even, had recognized Mackenzie King as someone entirely different, and everyone treated him like he had a hole in his bag of marbles because of it? Of course that's Mackenzie King; even her boss knows it. No, she's never been a brunette. What are you talking about?
And that's exactly what happens in Burning Down the House.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the rays vecchio
Diagetically, everyone else treats Callum Keith Rennie's character as though he is Ray Vecchio. "Oh, good, you found him," says Det. Huey. Elaine, Franchesca, literally everyone else both at the station and outside of it treat Callum Keith Rennie Ray Vecchio as though he is David Marciano Ray Vecchio. They're acting exactly as any other TV character would in the face of a recasting: as though absolutely nothing had happened.
Except for Fraser.
Fraser's specific brand of parareal Canadian plot magic means that he's immune to the recasting blindness; he's acting as an agent of the viewer, voicing our non-diegetic concerns. Fraser is (as he so often is) a character with one foot outside of the narrative. He's just always been like this and he doesn't know why.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh this man is infuriating and hot, fuck. shit.
And for a character who already thinks he is likely insane (he sees the ghost of his dead father! He communicates with his deaf half-wolf! He is instantly committed to a mental institution upon voicing the actual true story of his life!), this is very extremely distressing. Fraser thinks he's actually lost it this time, because everyone else in due South is acting like a TV character, and Benton Fraser is acting like a viewer.
This is so brilliant on so many levels. They just fully lampshade the damn thing. It allows our protagonist to speak for disgruntled or confused viewers. It engages at a postmodern level with television as a medium with a storied history (and due South is incredibly postmodern; nearly every episode is or contains a reference to another piece of media). It's written from the perspective of someone who loves and is knowledgeable about TV tropes.
And it gives us an entirely new Ray while still maintaining respect and loyalty to the original, something no other straight (lol) recast could ever do.
Tumblr media
Genuinely one of the most clever, witty, well-crafted hours of television ever made. I could write essays about so many different parts of it. And I guess I will!!!!!!

i find the minor part with meg in white men cant jump to conclusions very funny. there's just a compilation of scenes where you can see her actively questioning herself about why she's so incredibly attracted to this weirdo, as if she's not a. exactly as weird and b. creating all of these fascinating little scenes with him where she gets to be in charge and demanding and he gets to be wide-eyed and submissive and they're clearly both into it, even though it's "just" her taking him to task for not standing to attention and then telling him that he's got to pay for his replacement boots that he oh so carelessly lost while saving a (non-canadian) life

₊˚🕯️ my blog introduction. 🕯️ ‧₊˚
Tumblr media
₊˚🕯️ my username is viharmons, but i go by vi because of that. i'm a teenager, and i collect violet harmon exacts. 🕯️ ‧₊˚
as far as things i enjoy.. i really like music, collecting fun little knickknacks, playing piano, writing, reading, photography, and poetry. my favorite bands and artists are the ramones, the kinks, siouxsie and the banshees, cocteau twins, widowspeak, joy division, morrissey, hole, bikini kill, throwing muses, the doors, widowspeak, red house painters, and alison’s halo. i think i'm the biggest elizabeth fraser fan. i also love 80s music.
my hobbies consist of mostly musically inclined activities, like playing piano and singing. which is very cliche. i play often, and i sing along when i'm home alone. i'm always listening to music, too. i always alternate between genres because i like to try out different things every now and then. i scrapbook and journal a lot, i also like to decorate my photo album with stickers and pretty labels. and of course, i love my boyfriend. :)
my blog usually consists of violet’s outfits modeled on me, music excerpts, american horror story content, evan peters content, or poetry excerpts. i also love to talk to myself on here, this is like my personal diary and scrapbook, but it's actually public. i jot things down on here, like what i'm thinking about that day. those are just some mandatory things i'd like the world to know, hi tumblr!
